What to Do After a Tooth Extraction

Believe us when we say that if dentists had a choice, they would opt to preserve your teeth. The shared goal of all dentists is to keep your permanent teeth intact for as long as possible. The only time they decide to perform a tooth extraction in Marco Island is if they no longer have a choice.

A tooth extraction should only be executed by a licensed and qualified dentist. It’s a procedure that completely removes your entire tooth from its socket. After having your tooth removed, your dentist will give you specific aftercare instructions. You are expected to follow them.

Days 1 and 2

During the first 48 hours, your goal is to allow a blood clot to form. It’s normal to experience low-level bleed on the first day following the extraction but if you experience active bleeding for more than twenty-four hours, you should let your dentist know. In the first two days, you are also expected to rest. Allow your body the time it needs to heal.

Change the gauze whenever necessary. However, for the first round, let it stay for several hours so that a blood clot can form without interruption. Don’t rinse or gargle while the clot is still forming as you might accidentally dislodge it. Typically, you may take over-the-counter pain killers for the discomfort, but always check with your doctor first.

Days 3 to 10

During your recovery period, you will be advised to go on a soft diet so as not to disturb the site. Between days three to ten, you are expected to do saline rinses to get rid of oral bacteria and reduce your risk of developing an infection.

You can resume brushing and flossing, but avoid the extraction site as much as possible. The saline solution is perfectly sufficient during this time.
